For an enthusiast, a car is obviously more than just a car;
more than just a means of getting from point-A to point-B.
We'll expand on this more later, when the time seems appropriate. For the time being though, suffice it to say that this car belonged to a family member who's no longer with us.
When I inherited this 1974 BMW 2002tii, like many vintage, inherited cars -- it wasn't running. My goal was to not only return it to roadworthiness, but also to restore and modify it in true 'Save the Wheels' style. This means tasteful and clean, and of course the obligatory set of quality, interesting wheels. We already had a set of 13" Enkei Apache V's on hand, which were relatively suitable and appropriate, but something about the significance of this vehicle commanded something more rare.
The trunk was a struggle to get open, for whatever reason. Once inside (and with bumpers removed) we quickly started evaluating options for shaving and body work.
Like previous cars, our obsession with Impul took hold... How would a set of Hoshino Racing wheels look on a 2002? Has anyone ever mounted Hoshino's on a 2002??
Our good friend and Save the Wheels photographer, George, did a couple of quick renderings to see if this might be something worth truly vetting:
With the help of JDM Wheels Australia (jdmwheels.com.au/) and a lot of luck we were able to source a set of 14" Impul Hoshino Racing wheels in 4x100. This particular 4-vane style of Hoshino's are discontinued, and they're even more rare in this bolt pattern.
They of course require a refurbishment, but that's nothing we can't handle. Eventually (as in years from now) a 14" to 15" conversion will probably be in order.
One thing we noticed after driving the 02 for a few days is that the side mirror placement is somewhat poor. A Talbot-style mirror mounted on the hood seemed like a reasonable and classy alternative. For Reference, via Ireland Engineering.com:
Since it was already having the original mirror locations shaved, we also felt the desire to modernize the car by removing and shaving the radio antenna, rub strips, front & rear reflectors, and the chrome trim that encircles the entire car just below the hoodline.

In 1969, BMW introduced the 2000tii ('touring international, injected'), BMW's first fuel-injected model, featuring Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection. Years later the 2002tii featured the same engine, which produced 130 bhp (97 kW; 132 PS) at 5,800 RPM's and 131 lb·ft (178 N·m) at 4,500 RPM's. It had a top speed offering of 185 km/h (115 mph).
Now after 40 years, who knows how degraded the performance could be?! But that's not what I'm concerned with anyways.
This car DOES feature the original mechanical fuel-injected engine. As I learn more about the car, this quality seems to be a feat unto itself. Most tii owners have either scrapped the original setup for a more performance oriented fuel delivery system, or they've swapped the engine completely.
So despite whatever inefficiency, I'm currently resisting the urge to modify for performance. There's just something nostalgic about the original guts.
